Laura Wolvaardt named interim South Africa Women captain

Laura Wolvaardt has been appointed the interim captain of South Africa women's team for the upcoming series against Pakistan and New Zealand, Cricket South Africa announced on Thursday. The decision comes following Sune Luus relinquishing her position after having served in that capacity for almost two years in Dane van Niekerk's absence. and vice-captain Chloe Tryon's being unavailable for the Pakistan tour.
Since 2017, Luus captained South Africa in 34 ODIs, 34 T20Is and the only Test the team played last year against England - all on interim basis. Wolvaardt, who has been a part of the South African setup since 2016, has featured in 1 Test, 80 ODIs and 53 T20Is. The board also stated that the 24-year-old batter's position will be reviewed following the series against New Zealand.
South Africa have been without a full-time captain since van Niekerk announced her retirement from international cricket in March this year, soon after being left out of the World Cup squad for failing to pass a fitness test. However, the board recently decided to end the fitness test criteria for selection, leaving the decisions to the coaches, and opening up the possibility of several prominent senior players, including van Niekerk, possibly reversing their retirement decisions.
Commenting on her appointment, Wolvaardt said: "It's a massive honour to be offered this position as captain for the next two tours. It's something that I have always aspired to do, having played in this team for a couple of years. Having more of a leadership role is something I've wanted to take on. It'll help me as a cricketer and learning to think as a captain on the field will hopefully help my batting as well.
"I'm very excited to be able to contribute in another way too, and not just in batting. It still feels surreal at the moment but it will all become more real when I meet up with the team in Pakistan.
"What I can bring to the role is the experience that I have in the side. I've been playing international cricket since I was 16 years old, I know quite a lot of players in the circuit and I've been playing in the leagues as well, so I've played a lot of cricket in recent years and hopefully, I'm able to use that experience and the knowledge to my advantage when I captain the team.
