Stokes's ODI return changes the dynamic a little bit - Buttler

England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler admitted that Ben Stokes's ODI return for the 50-overs World Cup later this year as a specialist batter 'changes the dynamic a little bit' with regards to the squad selection. Stokes's decision meant England picked him and left out the exciting Harry Brook from their provisional squad of 15 for the showpiece event.

"Of course, Ben Stokes coming back and being available just as a batter sort of changes the dynamic a little bit. Ben's a fantastic player to be able to welcome back, so it's a really tough selection," Buttler said.

Brook made peace with the decision, despite the rapid rise he's made in English cricket. He made his T20I debut in January 2022 and earned his Test cap in the same year in September before playing the first of his three ODIs so far in January 2023.

"Obviously it's disappointing but I can't do anything about it now," Brook said. "You've just gotta move on. I'm trying not to think about it anymore."

Despite the 24-year-old wanting to move on, Buttler hinted that the door was not completely closed on the possibility of Brook being on the plane to India in October.

"There's still a long time before everyone is meant to get on the plane, so we'll wait and see what happens," Buttler said.

Brook, who is currently plying his trade in the Hundred, responded to the disappointing news of being overlooked for the provisional squad by smashing a 41-ball century for Northern Superchargers and is currently second on the batting charts for this season - incidentally, only behind Buttler.

"We all know Harry's a fantastic player and we saw what he can do the other night," Buttler added. "It's not like it's a surprise: we know what a brilliant player he is, he's just the unfortunate one to not be in that squad at the moment."

Though the decision to omit Brook turned a few heads, Buttler opined that selection headaches like these were 'good problems to have' and reflected the quality of white-ball cricket from England over the last few years.

"We're blessed with a lot of strength in depth, and talent. [There are] excellent players not in that provisional squad at the moment. It's been the nature of England squads in the white-ball teams over the last few years really, which is a great sign for us. They're good problems to have," Buttler said.
